4.5.3 Seismic Activity
The surface facilities (well pads, processing facilities, pipelines, office structures, etc.) must be designed
to withstand the remote possibility of earthquakes and tremors in the development area. If this
information is not already available, a detailed geotechnical seismology evaluation should be performed.
Some of the items this study should address would include:
• Site geology and soil conditions
o Liquefied sands
o Quick sensitive sands
o Thick deposits of soft soils overlying rock
• Seismic design parameters
o PGA (Peak Ground Acceleration)
o PGV (Peak Ground Velocity
o PGD (Peak Ground Displacement)
• Possibility for permanent displacement (could impact pipelines)
