SENIORS SERVICES DIVISION –<br />
COMMuNITY DEVELOpMENT<br />
Social Workers partner with older adults in<br />
the community, with The City <strong>of</strong> Calgary<br />
staff and with community agencies to meet<br />
the needs <strong>of</strong> older adults in Calgary. They<br />
assist older adults in the following ways:<br />
• To identify needs in their communities<br />
and neighbourhoods;<br />
• To bring older adults in the community<br />
together to talk about issues that effect<br />
them and services they may require;<br />
• To work with older adults in planning<br />
special projects and events that promote<br />
the well-being <strong>of</strong> all older adults in<br />
community life; and<br />
• To assist older adults in advocating for<br />
their own needs.<br />
Below are some examples <strong>of</strong> the projects that<br />
social workers have been involved in planning.<br />

Hidden in the Cultural Fabric—Elder Abuse<br />
and Neglect in Ethno-Cultural Communities<br />
New Horizons for Seniors Program has provided<br />
a funding grant to develop resources<br />
to address elder abuse and neglect in ethnocultural<br />
communities. This project is a partnership<br />
with the University <strong>of</strong> Calgary, the<br />
Calgary Chinese Elderly Citizens<br />
Association, the Alliance to End Violence<br />
and the City <strong>of</strong> Calgary Seniors <strong>Services</strong><br />
Division. The project is provincial and will<br />
be holding focus groups within 5 cities<br />
across Alberta (Calgary, Edmonton,<br />
Lethbridge, Medicine Hat and Red Deer). A<br />
Seniors <strong>Services</strong> Division member sits on<br />
the steering committee.<br />
Seniors Week<br />
The <strong>of</strong>ficial provincial and City <strong>of</strong> Calgary<br />
kick-<strong>of</strong>f to Seniors Week is held annually at<br />
the Calgary Zoo in partnership with the<br />
Provincial Seniors’ Ministry, the Seniors<br />
<strong>Services</strong> Division, several other City <strong>of</strong><br />
Calgary business units, and the Calgary Zoo.<br />
Free admission to the Zoo is <strong>of</strong>fered to seniors<br />
60+ on the day <strong>of</strong> the event. CART captioning<br />
services are provided throughout the<br />
ceremony for audience members who are<br />
deaf and hard <strong>of</strong> hearing. Seniors <strong>Services</strong><br />
Division staff chair the Kick-<strong>of</strong>f committee,<br />
and provide on-site assistance in the running<br />
<strong>of</strong> the event.<br />
Caribbean 50+ Group<br />
A group <strong>of</strong> Caribbean older adults have<br />
been coming together to look at their skills<br />
and needs in order to discover their<br />
strengths and abilities. Seniors <strong>Services</strong><br />
Division staff are providing facilitation and<br />
space for this group to come together to<br />
learn more about each other, learn about<br />
resources and services available to older<br />
adults and how to age well.<br />
The City <strong>of</strong> Calgary, Community and<br />
Neighbourhood <strong>Services</strong> has a number <strong>of</strong><br />
community service <strong>of</strong>fices throughout the<br />
city. Community Social Workers and<br />
Community Recreation Coordinators assist<br />
older adults and community organizations<br />
in creating more age-friendly communities.<br />
