SENIORS SERVICES DIVISION –

Social Workers partner with older adults in
the community, with The City of Calgary
staff and with community agencies to meet
the needs of older adults in Calgary. They
assist older adults in the following ways:
• To identify needs in their communities
and neighbourhoods;
• To bring older adults in the community
together to talk about issues that effect
them and services they may require;
• To work with older adults in planning
special projects and events that promote
the well-being of all older adults in
community life; and
• To assist older adults in advocating for
their own needs.
Below are some examples of the projects that
social workers have been involved in planning.

Hidden in the Cultural Fabric—Elder Abuse
and Neglect in Ethno-Cultural Communities
New Horizons for Seniors Program has provided
a funding grant to develop resources
to address elder abuse and neglect in ethnocultural
communities. This project is a partnership
with the University of Calgary, the
Calgary Chinese Elderly Citizens
Association, the Alliance to End Violence
and the City of Calgary Seniors Services
Division. The project is provincial and will
be holding focus groups within 5 cities
across Alberta (Calgary, Edmonton,
Lethbridge, Medicine Hat and Red Deer). A
Seniors Services Division member sits on
the steering committee.
Seniors Week
The official provincial and City of Calgary
kick-off to Seniors Week is held annually at
the Calgary Zoo in partnership with the
Provincial Seniors’ Ministry, the Seniors
Services Division, several other City of
Calgary business units, and the Calgary Zoo.
Free admission to the Zoo is offered to seniors
60+ on the day of the event. CART captioning
services are provided throughout the
ceremony for audience members who are
deaf and hard of hearing. Seniors Services
Division staff chair the Kick-off committee,
and provide on-site assistance in the running
of the event.
Caribbean 50+ Group
A group of Caribbean older adults have
been coming together to look at their skills
and needs in order to discover their
strengths and abilities. Seniors Services
Division staff are providing facilitation and
space for this group to come together to
learn more about each other, learn about
resources and services available to older
adults and how to age well.
The City of Calgary, Community and
Neighbourhood Services has a number of
community service offices throughout the
city. Community Social Workers and
Community Recreation Coordinators assist
older adults and community organizations
in creating more age-friendly communities.
