General Information:
The Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan
(AHCIP) provides eligible residents of Alberta
and their dependants with coverage for:
• medically required services provided by
physicians;
• medically required oral and maxillofacial
surgery and medically required dental
services;
• medically required stays and services in
Alberta hospitals; and
• limited coverage for services provided by
optometrists and podiatrists (services must
be provided in Alberta).
All Albertans receive premium-free AHCIP
coverage.
Eligibility:
• New and returning Alberta residents applying
for coverage with the AHCIP must provide
documents with their application that prove
their identity, legal entitlement to be in
Canada and Alberta residency. There is a
three-month waiting period for coverage
when persons move permanently to Alberta
from another province or territory.
Temporary Absence:
• Costs for health care services are high,
especially outside Canada. Alberta Health
and Wellness recommends the purchase of
travel health care insurance, even for short
trips. AHCIP pays for out-of-country practitioner
services at the same rate that
Alberta practitioners receive for the same
service. Benefits for out-of-country hospital
services are limited to the rates listed
below, or the amount paid, whichever is
less. For inpatient care, the maximum
provided outside Canada is $100/day
(Canadian). Benefits are not payable for
the day of discharge. A maximum of $50
(Canadian) is payable for one outpatient
visit per day.
