• A monthly benefit available to most<br />

Canadians 65 years <strong>of</strong> age or older who<br />

have lived in Canada for at least ten years.<br />

may be eligible to receive a pension<br />

before the end <strong>of</strong> the ten-year period. A<br />

list <strong>of</strong> these countries can be found on the<br />

website.<br />

Guaranteed Income Supplement (GIS)<br />

• The supplement provides a monthly nontaxable<br />

benefit to low-income Old Age<br />

Security recipients living in Canada. The<br />

amount <strong>of</strong> the supplement is based on the<br />

applicant’s total actual income in the<br />

previous calendar year and marital status.<br />

In most cases, renewal is automatic with<br />

completion <strong>of</strong> each year’s tax return by<br />

April 30.<br />

Allowance<br />

• A monthly benefit for low-income seniors<br />

(age 60-64) whose spouse is eligible for<br />

Old Age Security and Guaranteed Income<br />

Supplement. 10 years in Canada required.<br />

Allowance for the Survivor<br />

• A Survivor is a person whose spouse or<br />

common-law partner has died and who<br />

has not since remarried or entered a common-law<br />

relationship. A monthly benefit<br />

is payable to a Survivor between 60 and 64<br />

who has low or modest income and who<br />

has lived in Canada for at least 10 years<br />

over the age <strong>of</strong> 18.<br />

Canada Pension Plan (CPP)<br />

• Benefits are paid to those persons who<br />

have contributed to the plan through<br />

employment. An application must be<br />

submitted in order to receive a benefit.<br />

A person cannot contribute to CPP after<br />

the age <strong>of</strong> 70. The Canada Pension Plan<br />

benefits include:<br />

- Retirement Pension: A pension normally paid<br />

after the 65th birthday. An application may<br />

be made between 60 and 64 if employment<br />

has ceased or substantially ceased.<br />
