Once examination scheduling has been confirmed, there should be a<br />

mechanism to ensure recall of prior imaging examination images and reports,<br />

which should be available to the reporting radiological medical practitioner as<br />

soon as practicable.<br />

The monitoring of scheduling efficiency permits optimization of access,<br />

throughput and resource allocation.<br />

4.1.2. Identification of the patient<br />

It is crucial that fail-safe mechanisms be in place to ensure that the patient is<br />

correctly identified, that the correct examination is performed and that the correct<br />

anatomical region is studied. There should be a documented protocol to ensure<br />

accurate identification of the patient and the examination performed.<br />

In view of the complexity of patient communications, multiple checks and<br />

balances should be in place. Constant vigilance is vital to protect patient safety.<br />

4.1.3. Examinations<br />

4.1.3.1. Patient confidentiality and physical privacy<br />

It is the responsibility of the facility to have policies and procedures in place<br />

to ensure that security and confidentiality of patient information and patient<br />

physical privacy are respected throughout the patient’s stay in the radiology<br />

facility. All staff should be aware of their responsibilities and obligations with<br />

regard to patient information and privacy.<br />

Patient information includes:<br />

—Biographical data;<br />

—Clinical information;<br />

—Medical images.<br />

The physical environment encompasses:<br />

—Waiting rooms;<br />

—Changing rooms;<br />

—Examination rooms;<br />

—Post-procedure observation areas;<br />

—Counselling rooms.<br />
