equipment information and resuscitation);<br />

Professional meetings and interdisciplinary meetings;<br />

Statutory and regulatory training (e.g. radiation safety, fire safety, lifting<br />

and handling);<br />

Internal and external audit reviews.<br />

6.1.2. Research<br />

Research, including participation in clinical trails, has many benefits for a<br />

radiology facility, including its impact on the quality of clinical practice and staff<br />

development.<br />

The research programme should:<br />

(a)<br />

(b)<br />

(c)<br />

Comply with a clear policy statement that includes matters of ethics,<br />

governance and the role and structure of the research committee of the<br />

institute/facility;<br />

Conform to recognized ethical standards for research activities, including<br />

those for patient radiation protection and the use of pre-planning patient<br />

dose estimates;<br />

Have the infrastructure needed to support the research.<br />

To be effective, a research programme should:<br />

(f)<br />

(g)<br />

Have high quality scientific personnel with a record in research;<br />

Publish the results of scientific research;<br />

Attract research funding to purchase any necessary materials, technical<br />

assistance or machine time;<br />

Allow time for personnel to devote to research activities;<br />

Conduct regular meetings to discuss research matters;<br />

Provide access to, or support for, professional statistical data analysis;<br />

Provide access to adequate library and computing facilities.<br />

When research is limited to small projects for postgraduate students or<br />

clinical trainees, it is important that:<br />

—Research activities be coordinated by a designated person;<br />

—Regular research meetings be held;<br />

—Experienced researchers be available to assist students.<br />
