91.6% undertrial prisoners were found belonging to the same State/UT as per domicile based classification. Some States/UTs have reported considerable figures of undertrial prisoners belonging to other States/UTs. In absolute number, Maharashtra has reported the highest number of undertrials (2,785) belonging to other States followed by Delhi (2,399), Gujarat (1,639), Uttar Pradesh (1,471) and Haryana (1,169). West Bengal has reported the highest number of undertrial prisoners (1,049) belonging to foreign countries followed by Maharashtra (678), A&N Islands (589) and Delhi (292). In percentage terms Andaman & Nicobar Islands has reported the highest 83.7% (589 out of 704) undertrial prisoners belonging to foreign countries. Relevant details may be seen in Table 5.2. Detenues Analysis on the basis of educational qualification showed that 711 out of 2,450 detenues were illiterate and 985 were educated below class X th standard. These two categories accounted for 29.0% and 40.2% respectively, which taken together constitute 69.2% of total detenues. Others 333 out of the 684 unspecified prisoners were illiterate and 229 were educated below class X th . These two categories accounted for 48.7% and 33.5% respectively, which taken together constitute 82.2% of total of such inmates. Classification of this category of prisoners on the basis of religion reveals that 57.5% (393 out of 684) adhered to Hindu religion while 37.1% (254 out of 684) were from Muslim community. The analysis of the prisoners on the basis of caste shows that the highest (70.0%) belongs to General category (479 out of 684) followed by 12.7% (87 out of 684) belongs to Scheduled Castes and 11.0% (75 out of 684) belongs to OBC category. 6.3% (43 out of 684) of the total such inmates were from Scheduled Tribes. Domicile based analysis showed that 57.9% of other prisoners belonged to the same State/UT. Only West Bengal (265) had such inmates belonging to other countries. Relevant details may be seen in Table 5.4. Classification of detenues on the basis of religion reveals that 60.6% (1,485 out of 2,450) adhered to Hindu religion while 26.5% (650) and 10.4% (254) were belonged to Muslim and Christian community respectively. The rest adhered to other religions. The analysis of the detenues on the basis of caste shows that about 42.5% (1,042 out of 2,450) and 25.3% (619 out of 2,450) belonged to the OBC and General categories respectively. 21.9% (536 out of 2,450) detenues were from Scheduled Castes while 10.3% (253 out of 2,450) were from Scheduled Tribes. Analysis of detenues on the basis of domicile shows that 92.8% (2,274 out of 2,450) detenues belonged to the same State/UT. Gujarat, Jammu & Kashmir, Nagaland and Uttar Pradesh reported 15, 7, 7 and 4 detenues belonging to other States respectively representing in their prisons. Jammu & Kashmir reported 42.7% (102 out of 239 detenues) detenues belonging to other countries in its jails. Relevant details may be seen in Table 5.3. 96
