Project Final Report – CUDBF April 30 th , 2009 ASEN 4028: Aerospace Senior Projects 14.0 Project Management Plan Author: Daniel Colwell Co-Author: Shivali Bidaiah 14.1 Organizational Responsibilities This project’s organization begins at the top with the customer, Dr. Brian Argrow. The customer’s requirements were provided to the project manager. The specialty engineers (safety, systems and software) take the requirements from the project manager and relay them to the subsystem technical leads. The safety engineer also oversees both the fabrication and testing engineers to ensure no test or manufacturing process presents a safety issue to a team member’s well being. Each technical subsystem consists of a lead engineer and multiple engineers, including underclassmen. The project’s webmaster and CFO operate in conjunction with the project manager. Figure 140 illustrates these concepts. Figure 140: Project Organizational Responsibilities The team member’s positions were determined with the help of the Myers-Briggs personality tests. The test resulted in 2 ENTJ (Field Marshal), 1 INFP (Healer), 2 INTJ (Mastermind), 2 ESTJ (Supervisors), and 1 INFJ (Counselor). It was determined that the 2 masterminds (who also had the most DBF experience) would become the team’s project manager and systems engineer. A supervisor was chosen as the safety engineer to ensure maximum safety during the 154

Subsystem technical leads were chosen based on experience and interest in the given field. 14.2 Work Breakdown Structure The breakdown of each subsystem’s work structure was determined based on technical responsibility. The program manager and system engineer focused on team organization and subsystem integration, respectively. Each subsystem has specific technical objectives which must be researched and designed to. The technical subsystems communicated with each other with the assistance of the project manager and systems engineer. Figure 141 is a diagram of this project’s work breakdown structure. Figure 141: Work Breakdown Structure 14.3 Construction and Testing Schedule Analysis At the end of the fall semester, a detailed construction and testing schedule was drafted in order to organize the team towards completing the major goals of this project. In hindsight, the predicted schedule and actual schedule differd greatly. Both the actual and predicted timelines can be seen in Figure 142. 155
