Spa<strong>in</strong> as an European benchmark <strong>in</strong> digital education. 10-03-2009<br />
• <strong>The</strong> British Government will provide €32 million <strong>in</strong> the development of a repository of<br />
educational contents us<strong>in</strong>g AGREGA, a multi-million euro open source educational platform funded<br />
and developed by the Spanish government for a similar project.<br />
• Jim Knight, M<strong>in</strong>ister of State for Schools and Learners said: “A partnership with the Spanish<br />
Telecommunications and <strong>Information</strong> <strong>Society</strong> Secretary of State has been signed … to develop<br />
a National Digital Resource Bank (NDRB), to create, search for, and share digital content” <strong>in</strong><br />
educational framework us<strong>in</strong>g the AGREGA technology.<br />
• <strong>The</strong> announcement comes after the sign<strong>in</strong>g of an agreement on 6th February 2009 <strong>in</strong> Madrid<br />
between the Spanish government and JANET, the National Education Network, to provide a<br />
repository solution which will deliver the National Digital Resource Bank.<br />
• <strong>The</strong> Spanish Government will share source code and technical documentation from their multimillion<br />
euro open source development called AGREGA.<br />
• <strong>The</strong> commercial equivalent is thought to have been cost at around £5 million per annum for<br />
software licences.<br />
