In a scenario of global economic downturn, international community bets on IS (IV) Government outlines plans for UK’s digital transition (29/01/2009) (16/06/2009) • Plan to secure Britain’s place at the forefront of the global digital economy on: • Next generation networks, universal access to broadband, the creation of a second public service provider of scale, the modernization of wireless radio spectrum holdings, a digital future for radio, a new deal for digital content rights, enhancing the digital delivery of public services. • In order to foster NGN, the Government is planning to collect a €10 annual tax on telephones lines, raising around € 248 million • Universal broadband access (≥ 2 mbps) is planned by 2012 and budgeted with € 330 million. • The Digital Britain Report underlines the importance of the communications sector, its crucial contribution to the economy and its role in building Britain’s industrial future. • The action plan outlines a program of work with commitments to: • Upgrade and modernize wired, wireless and broadcast infrastructure; • Secure a dynamic investment climate for UK digital content and services; • Provide a range of high quality UK made public service content; • Ensure fairness and access, with universal availability and promotion of skills and media literacy; • And develop the infrastructure, skills and take-up to enable widespread online delivery of public services. 60

The first letter in the “profitability alphabet” is “www” • Technology funds are, along with gold-based funds, the only equity market fund reporting positive results in 2009. • The sector is the top performer on the benchmark S&P 500 index for 2009, while the Nasdaq Composite Index, which is heavily weighted towards technology, is the only significant US market measure to be in positive territory for the year 61
