Recent analysts’ opinions … (XII) IBM and HP to install new science supercomputers in Spain. Cinco Días 03/11/2009 • HP and IBM have announced, in two days time, two different projects to promote supercomputing in Spain. IBM is planning to locale a brand-new computer which is 100 times faster than the current “Mare Nostrum” in Barcelona (Supercomputing National Centre), which means 10 13 flops. On the other hand, HP has recently launched, along with the Regional Government of Castile Leon, the “Calendula” supercomputer, which is able to process 35 teraflops. Spain is the referent in digital education (06/11/2009) • According to Vicepresident of Toshiba for Southern Europe in declarations to Expansión “Nowadays, Spain is the European referent as far as schools modernization model is concern.” • “In Italy, it has began providing the teachers with digital billboards, videoprojectors, and portable DVD, but it hasn’t already tackled the pupils digital equipment provision, since they are the ones who pressure teachers to increase their digital skills faster.” Telefónica strengthenes the staff to lead M2M market (Cinco Días. 16/12/2009) • Telefónica has set up a specific international unit, called Global M2M, in order to provide this kind of solutions. • More than 100 proffesional will be involved all around the countries where the unit will operate. USA: anti-crisis measures of the new Obama Administration (6/12/2008) (15/01/2009) • The support to physical and technological infrastructures will be a key priority of the new Obama Administration to face the current scenario of global economic downturn. • Within technological infrastructures, broadband promotion will be one of the pillars to circumvent the current downturn and improve US competitiveness standards. $ 6 Billion will be spent to expand broadband access in rural and other underserved areas. • Digital TV: Provision of $ 650 million to fund a federal coupon program subsidizing the purchase of digital converter boxes . • E-health: Provision of $20 billion to aid the use of electronic medical records. 57
