COMRADE OF LABOUR AWARD
Brother Albert Ong Hian Teck has served the TransCab Operators’
Association (TCOA) Branch of the National Taxi Association (NTA) since
it was formed in 2003. He played a key role in the setting up of NTA as
TCOA Executive Committee Member, and subsequently as the Chairman of
TransCab Branch, a position he holds today.
When NTA was formed in 2010, Brother Albert was unanimously voted by
fellow leaders from all the six taxi associations to be the General Secretary
of NTA. He also readily accepted the appointment by NTA and NTUC to
serve in the NTUC Membership Committee, and the NTUC Transport and
Logistics Cluster to help raise concerns and issues related to taxi drivers.
With more than nine years of service, Brother
Albert has played a major role in pushing through
key initiatives to deal with challenges such as the
Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome epidemic in
2003, the introduction of Central Business District
rules in 2008, and Medisave contribution under the
Tripartite Drive and Save Scheme in 2010.
Brother Albert has served as an important link between the management
and drivers, reflecting ground sentiments towards policies on behalf of
members. In bi-monthly and tripartite meetings with the Land Transport
Authority, Traffic Police and other Government agencies, Brother Albert has
raised operational and pertinent issues to ensure that it is resolved at
ground level.
In recognition of his positive contributions to NTA and fellow workers, the
National Trades Union Congress is pleased to present Brother Albert Ong
Hian Teck with the Comrade of Labour Award.
