Sister Rohana Ujang was elected into the Singapore
American School (SAS) Staff Branch Committee under
The Singapore Manual & Merchantile Workers’ Union
(SMMWU) in 2002. She was elected as Committee
Member in 2006, and has served as the Branch
Chairperson since 2006.
When the Education Services Union (ESU) was formed
in 2006, Sister Rohana stepped forward to serve, first in
the capacity of Executive Council Member and then as
Assistant General Treasurer, a position she holds today.
As an Instructional Aid in the Primary
Division of SAS, Sister Rohana was
instrumental in the smooth transfer
of SAS members from SMMWU to
ESU after the corporatisation took
place in 2006. In a major exercise
to harmonise benefits of locally
hired support and faculty staff in the
international school, Sister Rohana
played an integral role in ensuring
members’ concerns were addressed
while the school’s objectives were met,
achieving win-win outcomes.
As Branch Chairperson, Sister Rohana works closely
with committees to organise branch activities and
ensures that members are kept updated. She also
raised the branch unionisation rate consistently over
the years. Sister Rohana serves in the NTUC Care and
Share Committee, and actively encourages members to
participate in its programmes and activities.

Outcomes
In recognition of her positive contributions to ESU and
fellow workers, the National Trades Union Congress
is pleased to present Sister Rohana Ujang with the
Comrade of Labour Award.
