COMRADE OF LABOUR AWARD
Brother Winson Tan Kah Swee joined the Singapore News and
Publication Employees’ Union (SNPEU) in 1984. He was an elected
Committee Member when SNPEU merged with Singapore Printing
Employees’ Union to form the Singapore Press Holdings Employees’
Union (SPHEU). Brother Winson became the General Treasurer in
1993, and was the General Secretary in 2010, a position he
holds today.
Brother Winson drafts all the collective
agreement proposals, and was involved in
all collective agreement and annual
increment negotiations for the
main and subsidiary companies
of SPH. He worked tirelessly to
save jobs during downturns by
supporting cost-cutting measures,
making appeals to the company on
disciplinary cases, and helping poor
performers who were not suitable for reemployment
to receive ex-gratia payment
or employment assistance payment.
Having built a harmonious labour-management relations, Brother
Winson invited management partners to a union retreat in 2011 and
had the company hold the Infocomm and Media Cluster’s National
Day Observance Ceremony in 2012.
Brother Winson introduced a Member-Get-Member programme
to grow the union membership; and spearheaded committees that
organise activities to foster relationship amongst members.
A strong believer in leadership renewal, Brother Winson convinced
committee members to amend the Union Constitution to adopt the
3-Flow resolutions in 2012. This saw the Flow In of new members
into the committee, and Flow Up of some committee members after
he successfully persuaded some office-bearers to Flow On.
In recognition of his positive contributions to SPHEU and fellow
workers, the National Trades Union Congress is pleased to present
Brother Winson Tan Kah Swee with the Comrade of Labour Award.
