COMRADE OF LABOUR AWARD
PALANIAPPAN PALANICHAMY MANICKAM

Brother Palaniappan Palanichamy Manickam is a dedicated
unionist who has devoted 28 years of his life to the cause of the Labour
Movement. First elected to the Bank of India (BOI) Branch of the
Singapore Bank Officers’ Association (SBOA) in 1985, he was appointed
as the Treasurer. With his ability and enthusiasm, he rose to be the
Chairman in 1994, and holds that position today.
In 1997, he was appointed a Trustee of SBOA and was subsequently
elected to the Executive Council in 2004. He served in various positions
before his current post of Vice-President. He has also made significant
contributions through its sub-committees, including the effective office
administration of the union in his role as the Chairman of the
Supervisory Sub-committee.
Respected by both the
management and union
members for furthering
good industrial relations
for mutual benefit,
Brother Palaniappan
has handled workplace
issues and negotiations
skilfully and fairly. He has
been the key driver behind
the cordial and successful
conclusion of successive
collective agreements.
Under his leadership, Brother Palaniappan
has grown the SBOA-BOI Branch to 100 per
cent membership. He is an inspirational figure to younger committee
members and has mentored them for leadership succession, while keeping
a lookout for younger members to be inducted into the branch committee.
Since 2012, Brother Palaniappan has served on the NTUC Employment
and Employability Committee.
In recognition of his positive contributions to SBOA and fellow workers,
the National Trades Union Congress is pleased to present Brother
Palaniappan Palanichamy Manickam with the Comrade of Labour Award.
