3.4 Traffic Speeds
The speed limit for all roads in the study area is posted at 50 km/h. The collected traffic data identifies
the 85 th percentile speed of traffic. The 85 th percentile speed is the measurement generally used for the
design of streets and is identified by the Australian Standard 1742 as the “the speed at or below which
85 percent of all drivers are observed to travel under free-flowing conditions past a nominated point”.
Of the 11 sites surveyed for speed, 9 recorded an 85 th percentile speed of greater than 50 km/h, which was
highlighted a significant concern for local residents. The streets include (listed from lowest to highest):
Mingari Street – North of Curtis Road 51 km/h
Karri Street - East of Shaun Court 58 km/h
Maltarra Road – North of Cutana Crescent 59 km/h
Alawoona Road – South of Yera Court 59 km/h
Alawoona Road – South of Karinga Crescent 60 km/h
Carcoola Road – North of Aruma Crescent 60 km/h
