The advantages <strong>of</strong> road cushions, compared to road humps are:<br />

The discom<strong>for</strong>t to cyclists is not as adverse as road humps, as cyclists can travel between the cushions.<br />
They can be designed so that they do not significantly impact on emergency and commercial vehicles.<br />
Road cushions are appropriate to use on bus routes while humps are inappropriate.<br />
The disadvantages <strong>of</strong> road cushions, compared to road humps are:<br />

They are less effective in slowing motorcyclists.<br />
Drivers can reduce their effect by traversing the cushions with only two wheels.<br />
The majority <strong>of</strong> streets within the study area were identified to experience 85 th percentile speeds greater<br />
than 50 km/h, with a number <strong>of</strong> streets experiencing (at irregular times) speeds higher than 100 km/h.<br />
Speeds greater than 100 km/h are not considered to be the norm, however more a result <strong>of</strong> the regular<br />
hoon activity that occurs within the study area (and as advised by a large proportion <strong>of</strong> residents that<br />
responded to the community questionnaire survey).<br />
A key contributor to these higher than posted speeds is the long straight sections <strong>of</strong> road between<br />
intersections. Lane narrowing / kerb extensions may assist in reducing overall vehicle speeds. Feedback<br />
from the community questionnaire survey indicated that local residents would be supportive <strong>of</strong> the<br />
