ABOUT <strong>THE</strong> AUTHOR<br />

Katherine Beckett is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sociology and<br />

the Law, Societies & Justice Program at the University of Washington in Seattle.<br />

Katherine received her Ph.D. from UCLA’s Department of Sociology in 1994. Her<br />

research interests include policy responses to crime and drug use, socio-legal<br />

studies, punishment, and social control. She has published numerous articles and<br />

book chapters on these topics, including several articles analyzing the politicaleconomic<br />

causes and consequences of the expansion of the social control<br />

apparatus in industrialized democracies. She is the author of two books: The<br />

Politics of Injustice: Crime and Punishment in America (with Theodore Sasson, Sage<br />

Publications) and Making Crime Pay: Law and Order in Contemporary American<br />

Politics (Oxford University Press) on these topics.
