Health and Medicinal Food Products<br />

<strong>All</strong> health and medicinal food products need <strong>to</strong> be classified by the National Pharmaceutical<br />

Control Bureau (NPCB). Under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, Control <strong>of</strong> Drugs and Cosmetics<br />

Regulations 1984, NPCB will determine if the health or medicinal food products need <strong>to</strong> be<br />

registered. An import license may be necessary and issued by the Compliance Unit. In order <strong>to</strong><br />

register with the NPCB, the exporter or appointed distribu<strong>to</strong>r need <strong>to</strong> write <strong>to</strong> NPCB stating the<br />

name <strong>of</strong> the products, ingredients and its percentage, claims/usage and attach a copy <strong>of</strong> the<br />

label/product literature.<br />

Biotechnology Products<br />

The Lower House <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Malaysia</strong>’s Parliament passed the Biosafety Act on June 27 2007,<br />

followed by the Upper House’s approval on July 11, 2007. It is currently waiting for final<br />

approval <strong>of</strong> the Bill by King <strong>of</strong> <strong>Malaysia</strong>.<br />

Clause 61 states that: <strong>All</strong> living modified organisms, items containing living modified organisms and<br />

products <strong>of</strong> such organisms shall be clearly identified and labeled in a manner <strong>to</strong> be prescribed and<br />
