John Hunter, formerly Reader in <strong>Archaeology</strong> at Bradford, took up the Chair in <strong>An</strong>cient<br />

History and <strong>Archaeology</strong> at the University <strong>of</strong> Birmingham in 1996. He specialises in Viking<br />

studies and has <strong>ca</strong>rried out multi-period fieldwork in Scotland, particularly in Orkney and Fair<br />

Isle, on which he has published Fair Isle, the archaeology <strong>of</strong> an island community. He also has interests<br />

in cultural resource management and in forensic archaeology which he has helped to develop as<br />

a recognised sub-discipline. Studies in crime: an <strong>introduction</strong> to forensic archaeology appeared in 1994.<br />

Ian Ralston taught at the University <strong>of</strong> Aberdeen before moving to Edinburgh, where he is<br />

now a Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> <strong>Archaeology</strong>. A former Chairman <strong>of</strong> the Institute <strong>of</strong> Field Archaeologists,<br />

his research interests include Scottish archaeology (notably its later prehistory), the Iron Age <strong>of</strong><br />

France and applied archaeology. He recently co-edited Scotland: environment and archaeology 8000<br />

BC-AD 1000 and has previously edited Archaeologi<strong>ca</strong>l resource management in the UK: an <strong>introduction</strong><br />

with John Hunter.<br />

Nicholas Barton is a Senior Lecturer in the Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>An</strong>thropology at Oxford Brookes<br />

University. His main areas <strong>of</strong> research are in Palaeolithic and Mesolithic archaeology. He is currently<br />

writing up research on the human uses <strong>of</strong> <strong>ca</strong>ves in the Wye Valley, Herefordshire, and is codirector<br />

with Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Christopher Stringer <strong>of</strong> the Gibraltar Caves Project. He sits on the UISPP<br />

Commission for the European Upper Palaeolithic and has recently published Stone Age <strong>Britain</strong>.<br />

Timothy Champion is a Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> <strong>Archaeology</strong> at the University <strong>of</strong> Southampton, and a<br />

former President <strong>of</strong> the Prehistoric Society. His research interests include the later Bronze Age<br />

and Iron Age <strong>of</strong> western Europe, the evolution <strong>of</strong> complex societies, and the contemporary<br />

understanding <strong>of</strong> the past. Recent publi<strong>ca</strong>tions (as co-editor) include Nationalism and archaeology in<br />

Europe and England’s coastal heritage.<br />

Kate Clark lectured in industrial archaeology at the Ironbridge Institute, was Monuments Manager<br />

for the Ironbridge Gorge museum and whilst there, collaborated with Judith Alfrey on a major<br />

research project, published as Lands<strong>ca</strong>pe <strong>of</strong> industry (Routledge: 1994). Since then she has been<br />

Conservation Officer for the Council for British <strong>Archaeology</strong> and is now Head <strong>of</strong> the Histori<strong>ca</strong>l<br />

<strong>An</strong>alysis and Research Team at English Heritage. Her research interests lie in industrial archaeology,<br />

and the integration <strong>of</strong> buildings and lands<strong>ca</strong>pes as a basis for conservation.<br />

Timothy Darvill is Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> <strong>Archaeology</strong> in the School <strong>of</strong> Conservation Sciences,<br />

Bournemouth University. His research interests focus on archaeologi<strong>ca</strong>l resource management<br />

and the Neolithic period in northern Europe. He is currently Director <strong>of</strong> the Billown Neolithic
