Whilst <strong>the</strong>se products use a m<strong>in</strong>imal portion of <strong>the</strong> crop that is sold <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> domestic market, <strong>the</strong><br />
contribution from new products to total sales and marg<strong>in</strong>s of <strong>the</strong> domestic <strong>in</strong>dustry is grow<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong><br />
significance.<br />
These products consume a very small percentage of <strong>the</strong> total crop, provide a higher gross value of<br />
rice per tonne consumed, and add a suitable marg<strong>in</strong> over <strong>the</strong> higher costs of product<br />
transformation, packag<strong>in</strong>g and market<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
Value-add<strong>in</strong>g has also entailed <strong>the</strong> market<strong>in</strong>g of specialised rice varieties which have shown better<br />
returns to <strong>the</strong> farmer.<br />
