<strong>Price</strong> <strong>Determ<strong>in</strong>ation</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Australian</strong> <strong>Food</strong> <strong>Industry</strong> A <strong>Report</strong><br />
Pric<strong>in</strong>g and cost <strong>in</strong>formation<br />
The <strong>in</strong>formation conta<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>in</strong> this section of <strong>the</strong> report has been compiled and analysed by<br />
Whitehall, based on its own <strong>in</strong>vestigations and <strong>in</strong> consultation with a number of <strong>in</strong>dustry<br />
organisations and participants, as well as a review of available published material.<br />
This is not an economic study of food pric<strong>in</strong>g – it has been based on significant commercial<br />
analysis and consultation with food <strong>in</strong>dustry decision-makers. It <strong>the</strong>refore conta<strong>in</strong>s a significant<br />
number of assertions that have been based on <strong>the</strong> consultant’s analysis of factors <strong>in</strong>fluenc<strong>in</strong>g<br />
pric<strong>in</strong>g and cost relationships. These assertions are not always backed by empirical data but<br />
result from confidential discussions with <strong>in</strong>dustry.<br />
One of <strong>the</strong> significant challenges <strong>in</strong> undertak<strong>in</strong>g an exercise of this nature is access<strong>in</strong>g reliable and<br />
accurate data. In general, <strong>the</strong> study found that food <strong>in</strong>dustries are currently mak<strong>in</strong>g a low level of<br />
<strong>in</strong>vestment at <strong>in</strong>dustry level <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry-wide data. As <strong>the</strong> food <strong>in</strong>dustry becomes more<br />
concentrated and <strong>in</strong>tegrated, <strong>the</strong>re is a high risk that <strong>the</strong> transparency of <strong>in</strong>formation and<br />
<strong>in</strong>telligence will be reduced.<br />
Literature reviews<br />
A comprehensive review has been undertaken of available literature published <strong>in</strong> recent years.<br />
This has relevance to <strong>the</strong> analysis of food pric<strong>in</strong>g and <strong>the</strong> factors affect<strong>in</strong>g prices and costs<br />
through major grocery food value cha<strong>in</strong>s.<br />
