The largest island is Samui, which is also closest to
the Thai mainland. Tongsai is a small, private bay on the
northeastern tip nestled in 25 acres of beautiful gardens
that melt into the surroundings.
The story of the Tongsai Bay began in 1985, when the
late Khun Akorn Hoontrakul, then chairman of The Imperial
Family of Hotels, saw Tongsai Bay from the sea and
declared that it was love at first sight. It went on to become
the first five-star luxury hotel on Koh Samui. A short 10
minutes drive from Samui Airport found us winding along
the driveway at the Tongsai Bay, now a member of Summit
Hotels & Resorts.
Emerald, fertile tropical gardens submit to the secluded
sandy bay, lined by deck chairs and gazebos. Set back from
the beach are 83 suites, cottages and villas. All rooms boast
mesmerising ocean views and spacious terraces, although
our Grand Pool Villa is on another level all together. Perched
on the hillside, the large terraces include a gazebo (where
we nap in the eve open-air, beneath a mosquito net) as
well as a bathtub-for-two, a pantry-bar area, a dining table
and sun loungers beside a private plunge infinity pool. In
the Grand Villas you’re more likely to languish outdoors and
take in the spectacular panoramic view of the ocean than
retreat inside. Although inside you’ll find a private sanctuary
– with high ceilings, a four-poster bed and lounge as well as
a dressing quarter with his’n’her vanity basins, a dressing
table, double built-in wardrobes and a shower.
We stroll across the bay and wind up the leafy peninsula
to the Prana Spa, which specialises in a relaxing technique
of Thai massage. It revolves around synchronising the mind
and body to decrease stress. A series of spa cottages are
positioned around a courtyard, each uniquely designed
