Experiment 3: Founder Effect<br />
The same populaon of buerflies is in the path of a hurricane. All survive, but 10 are blown to a new<br />
locaon. These 10 start a new populaon, their progeny will reflect the founders gene pool. This is<br />
known as the founder effect.<br />
Materials<br />
Beaker #1<br />
Beaker #2<br />
Beaker #3<br />
Note: When you are finished with<br />
this experiment, return the beads<br />
to their appropriate bags.<br />
Procedure<br />
1. Remove 10 individuals from beaker #1, 5 from beaker #2 and 2 from beaker #3. These are the<br />
founders of your new populaon.<br />
2. Record your results and place the beads back in their respecve beakers.<br />
3. Repeat this process 4 more mes (for a total of 5 trials).<br />
