The Musicians’ Union is the largest union of musicians in the world and
represents over 30,000 members working in all sectors of the music
business. It provides a comprehensive range of services to members,
including information and guidance on all matters relating to the music
industry (see page 78 for more information).

The FRTM Section was established in
1998 to better represent the interests of
MU members involved in folk, roots and
traditional music. The Section provides
specialist advice and information, and is
committed to enhancing and protecting
members’ rights, both as performers and
composers, through its work with other
organisations such as PRS, PPL and the
major engagers of UK folk musicians.
As well as lobbying for more and better
exposure for folk and traditional music in
the media, the Section promotes the huge
range of UK folk music talent at WOMEX
and other national and international
events, giving real assistance to UK folk
artists in establishing an international
profile.
Providing support for new artists is an
essential part of the Section’s remit and
through its association with the BBC, the
Union offers free MU membership for the
winners of the BBC Young Folk Award
and the BBC Scotland Young Traditional
Musician of the Year Award.
This first edition of FOLK, ROOTS &
TRADITIONAL MUSIC contains a selection
of some of the most exciting artists
currently performing in the UK. So simply
