String Driven Thing were pioneers of
folk rock, stablemates of Genesis and
Lindisfarne on the Charisma Label in the
heady underground days of the early
70’s.
Founded by Chris and Pauline Adams and
featuring virtuoso violinist Graham Smith,
they made three cult albums, then like
many in that crash and burn era,
they folded.
Fast forward 30 years and Chris reforms
the band with a two guitar, bass and
drum line up. The rootsy comeback
album ‘Moments of Truth’, is well
received, and in its wake comes
‘Songs from another Country’ which picks
up a five star review from Maverick.
But this is hardly surprising,
for String Driven were always about
songs, a currency that doesn’t devalue
with the years.
Doghouse Roses’ sound owes as much
to Townes Van Zandt as it does to the
Pentangle. They have released 2 EP’s,
and most recently, a full length album,
‘How’ve you been (all this time)?’ on their
own label, Yellowroom Music, distributed
by Proper Music.
Formed in 2006 after Iona Macdonald
attended a guitar workshop run by
Tasker the duo discovered their mutual
love of 60’s folk and rural blues music
and started playing gigs when they were
invited to tour with the Willard Grant
Conspiracy in 2007.
They have since returned to tour on
mainland Europe as a headline band and
will release a second album, provisionally
titled ‘Here come the Sinners and the
Liars’ in 2010.
You Are Wolf is an alt-folk/experimental
act based in East London.
She peddles both traditional British folk
and originals through looped vocals,
melodica, bass and whatever else she can
lay her hands on.
She weaves in spoken word and gentle
touches of electronica and throws in a
wild array of wild vocal techniques.
She has been described as a mixture of
Zap Mama, Rachel Unthank and
Laurie Anderson. Elsewhere, as Kerry
Andrew, she has a PhD in Composition,
is a published choral composer and
performs with adventurous a cappella trio
juice and punky jazz crew DOLLYman.
The combination of Cheyenne Brown’s
exuberant and sensitive harp playing,
Seylan Baxter’s mellow natural singing
and her creatively atmospheric cello
playing forms rich and varied musical
textures with distinctive style that puts a
new twist on traditional Scottish music.
Whether in slow airs, jigs and reels or
traditional songs Cheyenne and Seylan
bring precision and empathy to their
quirky, innovative arrangements.
Their energetic performances and warm
stage presence dispel any stereotypes
of stuffy instrumentalists and prove the
effectiveness of this unusual line-up.
Since the release of their debut album
‘2: forty’ in autumn 2007, Cheyenne
and Seylan have gone from strength to
strength. They have performed extensively
throughout Europe and the UK and have
also founded the Scottish Harp and Cello
Festival in Glasgow.
