Hjaz is collaboration between jazz
pianist/composer Alcyona Mick and
Egyptian/German singer Merit Ariane
Stephanos. Exploring Arabic and Jazz
traditions through improvisation and
experimentation, they draw on material
from Lebanese Legend Fayrouz, Arabic &
Andalusian Mwashahat, Sephardic songs
and write their own music.
Merit works with renowned vocal
ensemble The Clerks, the Al Farabi
ensemble, medieval group Joglaresa,
her own Arabic/Jewish group Jaljala and
teaches at the Royal College of Music.
Alcyona, a founding member of London’s
Loop Collective, has released two critically
acclaimed albums, ‘Around the Sun’
(2006), and ‘Blink’ (2008).

Internationally renowned musicians
Steve Lockwood and Chris Newman met
during a recording session 10 years ago,
it was obvious there was real musical
chemistry between them.
The rare combination of true virtuoso
harmonica playing and world class roots
and blues guitar eventually led to them
forming Hot Lips & Chilli Fingers so they
could explore their passion for traditional
American music styles further. 2010
promises to be even more successful with
bookings for concerts doubling as people
become more aware of their unique
sound.
In a culture saturated by average blues
musicians, their exceptional abilities
clearly stand out. To provide music for all
budgets and occasions they have added
the option of a 4 piece band with bass
and percussion.
