Carl Bakewell, singer-songwriter, born in
1969. From the age of 9 he accompanied
his father to local Folk Clubs making his
debut performance at the age of 14.
A familiar face on the local music scene,
he ran Market Harborough Folk Club in
Leicestershire for a number of years.
Despite a Love/Hate relationship with
Folk he has now returned – thanks to an
unforeseen chain of events sparked by
a BBC Radio Competition and airplay of
one of his songs on Folkwaves.
This led to the formation of Tiptoe Hill
with Anna Sagona (Keys) and Pete Russell
(Bass Guitar), writing and recording
original contemporary material from
‘The Dark Side of Folk’.
The “brilliant, innovative harping” of Máire
Ní Chathasaigh, Irish Traditional Musician
of the Year 2001, and the “astonishing
virtuosity and versatility” (Songlines) of
England’s premier flatpicking guitarist,
Chris Newman, have been heard world-wide.
Their performances are an enticing cocktail
of dynamic Irish dance-music, moving
airs, evocative songs and their own striking
compositions, spiked with exhilarating
shots of hot jazz and bluegrass and Chris’s
“subversively witty introductions”. Of their
sixth CD together, FireWire, the critics said:
“An eclecticism and spirit of adventure
that is quite thrilling” – The Times
“In a class of their own” – The Guardian
“Takes one of the most effete
instruments in traditional music and
breathes a fire into its belly”
– The Irish Times
“Dazzling virtuosity”
– The Daily Telegraph
