Technical Officials <strong>Handbook</strong>- ArcheryAbout DelhiThe City of Delhi is the capital of India and is considered a leader in India for having fantasticfashion, sport food and cultural events. Delhi has a population of 15.9 millionThe city is served by a <strong>world</strong> class international airport, Indira Gandhi International Airport. Travelto the city is approximately a fifty minute trip to the Central Business District from the airport.Visitors can rely on Delhi metros, buses and taxis to make moving between accommodation,competition venues and the many other attractions in the city convenient and fast.Delhi is a major business centre with many head offices from financial institutions in the CentralBusiness District. The Doordarshan (Sports) is the official broadcaster of the Games. There is amixture of 21 commercial and community radio stations in Delhi including official Games radiostation 3AW. The major daily newspapers are Times of India, Hindustan Times, Indian Express andHindu.Climate and WeatherDelhi enjoys four distinct seasons:Winter : November to January,Spring : February to April,Summer : May to JulyRainy : August to OctoberDelhi’s climate is temperate but is changeable. Delhi has beautiful weather in October with a meandaily maximum temperature of 24°C.October is a transitional month between rainy and winter. Hot weather can be experienced in thefirst fortnight, when the month’s highest temperature of about 35°C is usually recorded and it maybe accompanied by a strong northerly wind during the day. The hot weather usually comes to anend with a sharp wind change to the southwest and a rapid fall in temperature.Wind direction and strengthWind strength and direction are reasonably constant in Delhi and will not have any adverse impactthroughout the period of the Games.Air qualityThe Central Pollution Control Board has been monitoring the ambient air quality regularly at variouslocations in Delhi, measuring sulphur dioxide, oxides of nitrogen and particulates. Delhi’s air qualityhas steadily improved over the past fifteen years and is ranked as good by international standards.Commonwealth Games 2010 31
