Thehistoric name refers to the ghat (stepped embankment)at the edge of the river.Mahatma Gandhi was cremated on the banks of theYamuna on 31 January 1948, a day after he wasassassinated. He was walking to his customary prayermeeting at Birla House (Gandhi Smriti on Tees JanuaryMarg) when he was shot dead by a Hindu fanatic,NathuramGodse. Raj Ghat was later turned into anational memorial, the design for which was conceivedby Vanu G Bhuta. A stone footpath flanked by welltendedlawns leads to a walled enclosure, open to thesky, with a simple stone platform in black marble tomark the site.
