Technical Officials Handbook- ArcheryRED FORTThe Red Fort , usually transcribed into English asLal Qila or Lal Qila is a 17th century fort complexbelieved to have been constructed by the Mughalemperor Shahjahan in the walled city of Old Delhi (inpresent day Delhi, India). It served as the capital ofthe Mughal until 1857, when Mughal emperorBahadur Shah Zafar was exiled by the British Indiangovernment. The British used it as a military campuntil India was made independent in 1947. It is now apopular tourist site, as well as a powerful symbol ofIndia's sovereignty: the Prime Minister of India raisesthe flag of India on the rampants of the Lahori Gateof the fort complex every year on Independence Day.It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in2007. The fort lies along the Yamuna River, which fedthe moats that surround most of the wall. The wall atits north-eastern corner is adjacent to an older fort,the Salimgarh Fort; a defence built by Islam Shah Suriin 1546.The construction of the Red Fort began in1638 and was completed by 1648.HUMAYUN TOMBHumayun's tomb is a complex of buildings builtas the Mughal Emperor Humayun's tomb,commissioned by Humayun's wife Hamida BanuBegum in 1562 CE, and designed by Mirak MirzaGhiyath, a Persian architect. It was the first gardentombon the Indian subcontinent, and is located inNizamuddin East, Delhi, India, close to the Dinapanahcitadel also known as Purana Qila, thatHumayun founded in 1533. The Qutub Minar is 72.5 meters high (237.8 ft)and requires 399 steps to get to the top, although ithas not been possible for visitors to ascend thetower for some years, due to safety reasons. Thediameter of the base is 14.3 meters wide while thetop floor measures 3.8 meters in diameter. TheQutub Minar is notable for being one of the earliestand most prominent examples of Indo-Islamicarchitecture. It is surrounded by several otherancient and medieval structures and ruins,collectively known as Qutub complex. The complex islisted as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one ofthe most popular tourist destinations in Delhi.Akshardham is a Hindu temple complex in Delhi, India.Also referred to as Delhi Akshardham or waminarayanAkshardham, the complex displays centuries oftraditional Indian and Hindu culture, spirituality, andarchitecture. The building was inspired and moderatedby Pramukh Swami Maharaja, the spiritual head of theBochasanwasi Shri Akshar Purushottam SwaminarayanSanstha, whose 3,000 volunteers helped 7, 000 artisansconstruct Akshardham.The temple, which attracts approximately 70 percent ofall tourists who visit Delhi, was officially opened on 6November 2005.AKSHARDHAM TEMPLEIt sits on the banks of the Yamuna adjacent to theproposed 2010 Commonwealth Games village. Themonument at the centre of the complex of built off ofthe Vastu Shastra and Pancharatra Shastra. The complexfeatures a large central monument crafted entirely ofstone, exhibitions on incidents from the life ofSwaminarayan and the history of India, an IMAX feature,a musical fountain, and large landscaped gardens.Eating OutFrom the by-lanes of the walled city to the swanky hotels and restaurants, Delhi has the taste forall.
