The Heart of God 35
seeks and sends to seek. That picture emerged immediately after the Fall and was
intensified when God made His covenant with Abraham. If God’s people today
want to be covenant partakers, they must view global mission as something more
than optional or tangential. Passages like Romans 1:14-16 put mission at the
very core of what the Church is and does. If the Church is to be truly the
Church, it must operate, as Paul said to the Romans, “by the command of the
eternal God, so that all nations might believe and obey him” (16:26, NIV).
2. What significance does God’s covenant with Abraham have for the entire
world?
3. What are the implications of Israel being a chosen people?
4. What does gôyim mean and what makes this often-used Hebrew word critical
to understanding what the Bible says about mission?
5. In what way does Jonah’s attitude toward Nineveh mirror Israel’s reluctance to
engage in mission?
6. How does Jesus reveal the missionary character of God?
7. How does the Gospel of John explain mission as sending?
8. What statements by Peter and Paul show their understanding of the missionary
