Your Mission Board’s Story To fully achieve the objectives of this chapter, readers must do some research on their own. Due to readers’ differing church backgrounds, the directions that will take may vary. The way the <strong>Southern</strong> Baptists do global mission will be somewhat different, for instance, from what the Church of God (Holiness) does. Here are some questions to consider and to research: 1. How did the missionary work of your church or organization come into being? 2. Did mission happen as a part of original vision or did that come later? 3. What are the sodalities of your organization? 4. What are some key events or turning points in the history of your group’s missionary outreach? 5. Who are the important people in your <strong>missions</strong> organization’s history? 6. What are the key historical periods into which your group’s mission outreach can be divided? 7. What emphases or programs are trademarks of your group? 8. What are the chief goals for missionaries of your group? 9. How have concepts like contextualization and indigenization been evidenced and dealt with in your organization? 10. What solutions has the mission board come up with to erase paternalism? 11. What accountability structures have been put in place? 12. How are funds raised and spent? 13. With which parachurch organizations are the churches you are connected with the most familiar? 14. Do the missionaries of your organization have an exit strategy, a plan to leave a field? 15. How is leadership development done? 16. In terms of raw statistics, what does the work look like now compared to what it was 10 and 20 years ago? Some statistics to track over the 20-year period would include the number of world areas in which your mission organization is working, church membership figures, and the number of expatriate missionaries.
