248 Manuel Castells et al.that belong to different cultural-technological galaxies in the sharing of everydaylife. The Internet Galaxy of “Young Catalonia,” the McLuhan Galaxy(based on the mass media) of traditional working-class society, and theGutenberg Galaxy of the aging cultural elite coexist peacefully without actuallymerging in the practice of individuals. These are, indeed, three differentsocio-technical cultures. Thus, the Catalan network society offers, in a certainsense, a striking example of a transition from a traditional, industrialized societyto a network society: a transition that is made possible without majordisruption by the social cohesion of the territorial community and the culturaldynamism of the Internet-powered projects of autonomy.ACKNOWLEDGMENTSThe analysis presented in this chapter is based on a study conducted within theframework of the Project Internet Catalonia (PIC), a research program of theInternet Interdisciplinary Institute (IN3) of the Open University of Catalonia(UOC), under the general direction of Manuel Castells and Imma Tubella, andsponsored by the Government of the Generalitat of Catalonia. This particularstudy was conducted by the authors of this chapter.
