However, e-learning is also growing rapidly in thecorporate sector, and, indeed, in some aspects, e-learning has a unique functionin this sector. The more conventional application of e-learning is to movemore traditional training from a face-to-face mode to one delivered into theworkplace, and often to the desk or workstation of the employee. In this sense,it is similar to the use of e-learning in the formal education sector, except thatthe learning tends to be more modular, more skill-specific, and delivered “justin-time,”that is, on demand at the moment when the employee needs the trainingor information.However, there is a more fundamentally different view of e-learning in thecorporate sector, and that is in the sense of the learning organization (see, forexample, Sen<strong>ge</strong>, 1990). In this sense, e-learning is far more encompassingthan the conventional application of the Internet to study or training. In alearning organization, the aim is to use the Internet and access to integratedcompany databases to empower employees across the organization to learnmore about the operations of the organization, and to use that knowled<strong>ge</strong> andinformation to improve the products and services of the organization. In otherwords, it is about knowled<strong>ge</strong> mana<strong>ge</strong>ment (see Rosenberg, 2001).Thus, defining e-learning is not straightforward. Institutions often claimthat they are offering e-learning when all they have done is merely added anonline component to what is basically a face-to-face, print-based, or videobasedcourse. However, even courses designed from scratch as “online”courses will often contain printed readings, either in the form of required textbooksor collections of printed articles distributed to students by mail.
