We recognize the value and vulnerability of water<br />

because the purity of Canadian water is an<br />

essential hallmark of our products. The quality<br />

of the water we use in our brewing process is a<br />

critical factor in the quality of our product, and<br />

maintaining the availability of high-quality<br />

Canadian water is a major concern for us.<br />

2012 environmental Targets<br />

In 2009, we set targets on key measures such as<br />

water and energy use, as well as carbon emission<br />

reductions, that we will strive to achieve by the<br />

end of 2012. Our global companywide targets are:<br />

• Increase our waste and by-product recycling<br />

to 99 percent.<br />

• Reduce water use for beer and soft drinks<br />

plants to an industry-leading 3.5 hectoliters<br />

of water for each hectoliter of product.<br />

• Reduce energy use per hectoliter by<br />

10 percent.<br />

• Reduce CO2<br />

emissions per hectoliter by<br />

10 percent.<br />

energy Challenge<br />

Labatt is making significant contributions<br />

to achieving these goals. In one of the most<br />

ambitious efforts of its kind in company history,<br />

the company launched a comprehensive, sixweek<br />

initiative to reduce energy consumption<br />

at every brewery in Canada. Efforts focused on:<br />

• Identifying and correcting utilities leaks<br />

and misuse.<br />

• Identifying and communicating effective<br />

process and lighting shutdown.<br />

• Creating awareness of energy consumption<br />

and costs within employees’ area of influence.<br />

• Creating a sustainable mechanism for ongoing<br />

employee engagement in utilities reduction.<br />

The project was extended two weeks as a result<br />

of widespread and overwhelmingly positive<br />

response. The results were impressive with a total<br />

year-over-year reduction in energy consumption<br />

of 8 percent and a reduction in water consumption<br />

of 17.8 percent. Each of the seven participating<br />

breweries exceeded the challenge target of<br />

implementing at least one corrective action<br />

for every two employees. Overall, employees<br />

identified more than 2,100 improvement ideas and<br />

implemented more than 1,350 corrective actions.<br />

The labatt fresh Water alliance<br />

Canada is one of the few countries in the world<br />

privileged to have an abundant supply of fresh<br />

water available to its citizens, and Labatt has<br />

always regarded water as a touchstone of the<br />

country’s environmental wealth. We recognize<br />

the value and vulnerability of water because the<br />

purity of Canadian water is an essential hallmark<br />

of our products. The quality of the water we use<br />

in our brewing process is a critical factor in the<br />

quality of our product, and maintaining the<br />

availability of high-quality Canadian water<br />

is a major concern for us.<br />

In recognition of the importance of water to<br />

Canada, to Labatt and to our products, we<br />

launched the Labatt Fresh Water Alliance in<br />

2008 with an initial program to support the<br />

Canadian Land Trust Alliance (CLTA). This trust<br />

is a non-governmental, nonprofit organization<br />

established to preserve land and water resources<br />

for the benefit of the public. Most land trusts are<br />

located within watersheds.<br />
