Documenting an Export Shipment (continued)<br />

Document Shipments:<br />

A document is generally defined<br />

as a written, typed or printed<br />

communication of no commercial<br />

value. Call 1-800-782-7892 for<br />

a list of items that are classified<br />

as documents in your destination<br />

country. International documents<br />

shipped in an Express Envelope<br />

or in any other packaging generally<br />

do not require an invoice.<br />

Non-document Shipments:<br />

International shipments containing<br />

items other than documents<br />

typically require one original <strong>and</strong><br />

two copies of a commercial invoice<br />

in addition to the <strong>UPS</strong> Waybill or<br />

<strong>UPS</strong> OnLine-generated shipping<br />

label. Packages destined for Puerto<br />

Rico require one original <strong>and</strong> one<br />

copy of a commercial invoice in<br />

addition to the <strong>UPS</strong> Air Shipping<br />

Document or <strong>UPS</strong> OnLine-generated<br />

shipping label.<br />

Business or personal stationery may<br />

be used if it contains all the information<br />

shown on the blank invoice.<br />

Using a <strong>UPS</strong> Routing Form<br />

Take advantage of <strong>UPS</strong>-guaranteed<br />

import delivery options including<br />

fixed import rates. Use the Routing<br />

Form to instruct your international<br />

business partners to ship to you<br />

using <strong>UPS</strong>.<br />

A blank invoice can be found on page<br />

115 or at <strong>UPS</strong>.com ® *. In addition, a<br />

sample copy of a completed invoice<br />

is available for review at <strong>UPS</strong>.com.<br />

Prepare an S.E.D.:<br />

One copy of the S.E.D. is required if:<br />

– Any single schedule B commodity,<br />

technology or software in the<br />

shipment is valued at more than<br />

$2,500 (U.S.). This also applies<br />

to shipments between the United<br />

States <strong>and</strong> Puerto Rico.<br />

– An export license or license<br />

exemption is required, regardless<br />

of the value of the contents<br />

of the shipment.<br />

An S.E.D. is not required for shipments<br />

to Canada unless the commodities<br />

are being exported under<br />

an export license or license exemption<br />

or the shipment is destined<br />

for a third country.<br />

sample copy of a completed S.E.D.<br />

is available for review at <strong>UPS</strong>.com.<br />

Important: A Destination Control<br />

Statement should be placed on<br />

the commercial invoice to ensure<br />

prompt delivery. The correct wording<br />

of the statement is shown below<br />

<strong>and</strong> may be written, stamped or<br />

typed on the documentation:<br />

“These commodities, technology<br />

or software were exported from<br />

the United States in accordance<br />

with the Export Administration<br />

Regulations. Diversion contrary<br />

to U.S. law is prohibited.”<br />

Complete a Certificate of Origin:<br />

In addition to the one original<br />

PROCESS YOUR SHIPMENT<br />

<strong>and</strong> two copies of a commercial<br />

invoice, a Certificate of Origin is<br />

required to clear customs in many<br />

countries. Call 1-800-782-7892<br />

to determine if your shipment will<br />

require a Certificate of Origin.<br />

A blank Certificate of Origin can be<br />

In addition, a sample copy of a<br />

completed Certificate of Origin is<br />

available for review at <strong>UPS</strong>.com.<br />

Complete a NAFTA Certificate of<br />

Origin for shipments to Canada<br />

<strong>and</strong> Mexico:<br />

For goods that are made in a NAFTA<br />

country <strong>and</strong> meet NAFTA eligibility<br />

requirements, a NAFTA Certificate<br />

of Origin should be included along<br />

with one original <strong>and</strong> two copies<br />

of the commercial invoice. This<br />

certificate will allow goods that are<br />

NAFTA-eligible originating under<br />

the NAFTA Rules of Origin to qualify<br />

for the reduced or eliminated duty<br />

provisions under the North American<br />

Free Trade Agreement. For information<br />

regarding eligibility under<br />

the North American Free Trade<br />

Agreement, contact your local U.S.<br />

Customs <strong>and</strong> Border Protection office.<br />

A blank NAFTA Certificate of Origin<br />

can be found on pages 121 <strong>and</strong> 122<br />

or at <strong>UPS</strong>.com*. In addition, a<br />

sample copy of a completed NAFTA<br />

Certificate of Origin is available<br />

for review at <strong>UPS</strong>.com.<br />

Enclose all required export documentation<br />

in the <strong>UPS</strong> Waybill pouch<br />

or in an envelope marked “Export<br />

Documents.” Securely affix pouch<br />

or envelope to the lead package.<br />
