a d i c a l i s mWe ask you once more to visit us and Annemarie here,or if I may go to you.Yours most respectfully,Eberhard Arnoldd i a r yJuly 31, 1932Last week, on July 27, Mama and Hilde came here tofetch me home. Hilde had actually gotten up from hersickbed so that Mama wouldn’t have to travel alone. Itwas simply heartrending to see them standing before meagain, begging and pleading. Never has my mother’s lifelain open before me as in those hours. Starting at an earlyage, she served at Keilhau, toiling with utmost self-denialunder difficulties and hardships. She bore her childrenwith great pain, and for the sake of the cause had themcared for largely by others. Then Otto, on whom greathopes had been set, fell in the war; then Papa died, and afew years later Grandmother too. The burden of the taskremained, but she had to carry it alone more and more. She continued to give all her energies with a view tothe time when her children would relieve her of the taskand she would be able to rest after all her care and toil. And now this! This hit her harder, she said, than whenOtto fell. I could hardly bear seeing Mama and Hilde –apicture of deepest inner need and despair and extremehelplessness. “You rob us of all joy in life, you make ourlife joyless and sorrowful!”201
