a n n imany times for the long letter and the money. Now Ihave been here for a whole week and feel very much athome. I am not with the boys anymore but with the littleones, that is thirteen children from one-and-a-half yearsthrough seven years, so it’s infants and older children.<strong>The</strong> two littlest, two and one-and-a-half years, can’t walkyet but they crawl around the whole room quite rapidlyand get into all kinds of mischief.Living together in the house here is very enjoyable.<strong>The</strong>re are seven “aunties,” the matron, one nurse, andthen the cook and various kitchen-maids and housemaids,a chauffeur (a la Rosenberger), and an elderlyhandyman. <strong>The</strong> matron left on Tuesday and probablywon’t return while I am still here. She went to attend aFröbel conference and will take her vacation right afterthat. She is extremely energetic and everything alwayshas to be spic and span, but she is very nice.<strong>The</strong>re are three of us in our section –a kindergartenteacher, a so-called “house girl” (that is, a girl from thelocal elementary school), and I. Of course it’s a lot ofwork because of the children’s circumstances, but theyare such enchanting little people that it’s really a lot offun. Every day there is something new to be experienced,often the funniest little things. Especially the two littlestones are terrifically sweet. <strong>The</strong>se children will stay untilJuly 18, and then a new group will come for a courseof convalescence. I’m very happy that I will experienceanother group, since there are so many things you canlearn. At the same time it will be sad when all these dear58
