I did not want tobind myself to any firm belief or to commit myself.From her side, Emi-Margret wrote to her parents on May1, 1929:I talked for a long time with Anni about faithfulness,which for her is only a concept. For people who knownothing except the soul and its emotions, there is no suchthing as faithfulness. It would take too long to writeabout it all. We have long and heated debates. But actuallysuch a debate can only be described verbally. In acertain way she reproached me because I have a fixedcenter point in life from which I take my bearings. But atleast she knows that I never, never want to lose this fixedpoint; I told her so.For Emi-Margret, this “fixed point” was self-evident; thecommunity she grew up in was founded to be an expressionof faith. From her father, she had learned to admirethe Youth Movement’s vitality and joyful non-conformitywhile clearly seeing its shortcomings. In fact, EberhardArnold had written an article discussing the novels byGertrud Prellwitz that had so impressed Anni, in whichhe concluded: “Emotion without Christ’s spirit leads tothe abyss.”Anni’s correspondence with her family continued todescribe only the activities of college life.48

Here quite a few whodon’t have to travel far have gone home for the Whitsunweekend. There won’t be any activities here. From ourclass four have stayed, including Emi-Margret. But quitea few former students and teachers are coming to visit.I’m quite excited to see how it will all be.On Saturday we had a splendid experience. Ourhouse had a fire drill. A fire was simulated in the attic.Ladders were set up, the streets were barricaded, and thewhole house was doused. Two of the girls were carrieddownstairs and saved. They were laid on the grass, andsomeone pretended to give one artificial resuscitationwhile the other had her arms and legs bandaged. Therewas a great commotion when the two appeared upstairsagain. It was a terrifically funny business, with the wholehouse standing and watching from the windows.By the way, my bicycle arrived here hale and hearty onMonday and I already put it to use on Wednesday. Therewere five of us: the gym teacher, the arts and crafts teacher,the cooking teacher, Elli Stehr (a girl from our class), andI. We started off at 2:00 and went first to Friedrichsbrunn.At first we had to walk our bikes for quite some distance,but then we had a lovely ride.
