NOTES ON THE USE OF THE DIRECTORY
United Kingdom
There are at least three ways of proceeding in the unfortunate event of a breakdown and obviously
the particular circumstance will dictate.
1. In the first instance, the TR would be recovered to the garage of the people making the
recovery. The TR owner could then offer the directory and point out both parts suppliers and
specialist garages, which may have the necessary parts, or be able to repair the car, suitable
arrangements could then be made.
2. A second way is to point out to the recovery truck operator that you wish to be taken to the
nearest ‘TR’ specialist. The recovery truck operator could then phone ahead to ensure that the
garage can accept the car and make all the necessary forward arrangements, this has the
advantage of overcoming some of the language barrier which so often adds extra stress to a
traumatic time and is why the directory has been prepared. It’s easy to flip to the page and sign
language would then convey the point to the operator.
3. An independent way is, at the car’s demise, to turn to the map of the country, identify the
nearest supplier who may be able to offer help and give them a call. If the garage offers
‘recovery’ then it will probably be easier to recover the car to the specialist garage, rather than
the recovery vehicle summoned by the insurer, at least then, the TR owner will rest in the
knowledge that the car is in safe hands, although it may be that the insurer would not in this
instance reimburse the recovery cost. However from my experiences, Triumph people in Europe
are usually only too glad to help get you up & away so the recovery cost may not really become
an issue.
It is necessary to enter a word of caution, most of the ‘get you home’ insurances only cover for
ONE journey and it would be prudent to check the details before commencing the journey. In this
case, on note 2, it would certainly help if the recovery truck operator could phone ahead to ensure
that the garage would in fact be able to repair the car in a reasonable time and enable you to
complete the journey. It may therefore be preferable, in the first instance, to adopt note 3. If you are
lucky enough to be recovered by the specialist garage you have called and who, after examination
cannot fix the car, the call to the insurer can then be made. Note however that a recovery cannot
normally be made from a garage.
