There was one issue highon the agenda: a notable number of this endangered species hadgone missing.The Black-faced spoonbill inhabits wetlands, and is the star of HongKong’s Mai Po Nature Reserve. In late 2010, everything indicatedthat a record-breaking number of the birds would be visiting theirwintering grounds. “In early winter there was a very high countin Taiwan—their highest ever,” says Bena Smith, Mai Po ReserveManager. “People were assuming the winter just gone was goingto be a very good one. The early indications were that it could be ahealthy year for the Spoonbills.”The data later collected, however, told a different story. The officialinternational count done in January showed a drop in the number ofbirds visiting Taiwan, China (including Hong Kong) and Japan fromthe previous winter.Since 2000, the worldwide population trend for the Black-facedspoonbill has been very favourable. There were 2,347 birds countedin 2010. But in January 2011, the count was only 1,848, representinga 21 percent drop in the population.
