As a result, Hung and his team members must dilutethe seawater contents by various measures, such as ploughing thesoil to facilitate the penetration of rainwater. If all goes well, the firstsowing is expected to take place in July.As a dedicated birdwatcher, Hung is particularly concerned aboutbirds and their related ecological issues. Although in recent yearsthere has been greater awareness for the well-being of birds amongthe public, some photographers are acting in a disruptive mannerthat threatens local birds.Hung explains, “Some photographers attempt to attract the birds’attention using bait [worms] to feed the birds to get good pictures,which may affect the birds’ usual behaviour. Although there arelaws protecting birds in Hong Kong, these photographers wouldn’tbe prosecuted, as not every kind of harmful behaviour is taken intoaccount in the legislation.”As a bird-lover, Hung understands the motives behind thesepotentially destructive actions. It is part of his job, as aconservationist, to inform the public of their responsibilities tothe animals. “I believe some of these photographers’ actions maymainly be due to their passion for birds,” he says. “They want to getmore beautiful photos, but the way to achieve it may not be the bestoption for the birds. From these cases, I found that conservationcannot only focus on ‘hard’ skills—forcing people not to dosomething by law—but also the ‘soft’ skills—through education.
