epresent quite an unusual phenomenon. Where did the missingbirds go? The experts have not yet drawn any conclusions. One explanationspeculated on is a decline in the availability of food driven by habitatloss and changes in aquaculture practices across the spoonbillsrange. “In Taiwan, the conservationists there were of the opinionthat the spoonbill numbers have dropped because of a change inlocal aquaculture practices being employed by the pond fish farmersin the Tainan area,” says Smith. “It’s all related to the milkfish,which is the main fish that they breed and sell to the markets…thereis potentially less food for the spoonbills.”Perhaps there is no need to panic—at least for now. “The consensuswas that because the species had clearly, over the last 15, 20 years,been increasing almost every year and had been really healthy,” saysSmith. “Nobody had reported any major deaths or large numbersof birds being found dead in the region…so perhaps the birds hadfound some new sites to spend the winter.”Though scientists have yet to find out where the birds might havegone, it is encouraging to know that a declaration was signed at theInternational Symposium on Black-faced Spoonbill and CoastalWetland Conservation 2011. The document gives guidance anddirection to the local governments and organisations around thesites where the Black-faced spoonbill inhabits. The WWF team andexperts from other sites will continue to monitor the situation, andeveryone is looking forward to the spoonbill’s visit later this year. Former United States Treasury Secretary Mr HenryPaulson and his wife engage in birdwatching. Mai Po Nature ReserveHall of FameMai Po Nature Reserve’s stunning scenery hascharmed people from around the globe sinceits inauguration in 1983.
