The invasion of Bernicia seems to have meantthe expulsion of the native High-reeve, or ealdorman,Ealdred Eadulfs son, or his brother Uhtred, who hadkept up the tradition of friendship with the kings ofWessex. It is possible that Ragnvald held this partof Northumbria. Eadmund naturally feared the reconstructionof a great Viking power in the north,which would give him all the work of his father andbrother to do over again in ; 944 or 945 he invaded
