LightingENCOURAGEIntentCreate safe and com<strong>for</strong>table environments <strong>for</strong> all users through<strong>the</strong> use <strong>of</strong> an appropriate scale, location and level <strong>of</strong> lighting.For areas that expect any amount <strong>of</strong> pedestrian traffic, a standard“cobra head” street light fixture does not provide appropriate illumination<strong>for</strong> pedestrians, who require more focused lighting. Good lightingdiscourages unwanted activity and attracts desirable activity toga<strong>the</strong>ring places and along streets, promoting vibrant, safe placesinto <strong>the</strong> evening.XX Figures 5.a and 5.b: Integrated exteriorbuilding lighting design complements<strong>the</strong> architectural design <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> building.Guidelines5.0.1 Ample, attractive lighting should be incorporated into spaceswhere people will ga<strong>the</strong>r, linger or walk, including open spaces,play areas, courtyards, parking lots, transit stops, walkwaysand <strong>the</strong> landscaping that surrounds <strong>the</strong>m.5.0.2 Parking lots, and in particular walkways, should be well lit <strong>for</strong><strong>the</strong> safety and com<strong>for</strong>t <strong>of</strong> users.5.0.3 Parking lot lighting should be sized appropriately <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> type <strong>of</strong>use. Light standards <strong>for</strong> parking lots catering to <strong>the</strong> automobileshould include pedestrian-scaled lights throughout, but inparticular along walkways. Lighting standards <strong>for</strong> industrial andwarehousing lots should, at a minimum, provide pedestrianscaledlighting along walkways and at entrances.5.0.4 Decorative fixtures are encouraged <strong>for</strong> pedestrian-scaledlighting.5.0.5 It is preferable <strong>for</strong> fixtures to be spaced close toge<strong>the</strong>r withlower light levels than fur<strong>the</strong>r apart with more intense lightlevels.5.0.6 Lamps should provide “natural” whiter light, which increasescom<strong>for</strong>t and safety.5.0.7 LED lighting is strongly encouraged. Low-pressure sodiumlights are strongly discouraged as <strong>the</strong>y create an unnaturalcast.5.0.8 All exterior building and landscape lighting should be shielded,and directed downward on <strong>the</strong> site so as not to produce glareonto pedestrian spaces and adjacent uses.5.0.9 All exterior building lighting should be an integral part <strong>of</strong> abuilding’s architectural design.
