Catalog of Indicators Health 91 Name of indicator: Birth deliveries assisted by skilled personnel rate Definition: The proportion of birth deliveries attended by personnel trained to give the necessary supervision, care, and advice to women during pregnancy, labor, and the postpartum period, to conduct deliveries, and to care for newborns. Trained health personnel include doctors (specialists or non-‐specialists), and/or persons with midwifery skills who can manage normal deliveries and diagnose, manage or refer obstetric complications. Description: This indicator is used as a proxy indicator for providing a more accurately measure maternal mortality, and for monitoring short-‐term trends. Assistance by properly trained health personnel during pregnancy and during delivery can be used to measuring assesses and use health care service during pregnancy and delivery. It presents opportunities for reaching pregnant women with interventions that may be vital for ensuring prevention, detection and management of complication, thus providing them better health and wellbeing and that of infants.
