ACCESS TOWELL-DESIGNEDTECHNOLOGYTechnology design that considers<strong>gender</strong> issues can significantlyenhance on-farm productivityamong smallholders. A recent<strong>in</strong>tergovernmental report concludedthat “a priority task for scientists isto develop technologies that can…reduce the hours of work and<strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong>come per hour of workfor women.” 33Manual treadle pumps, for example,have been <strong>in</strong>troduced for irrigationand have been successfullyadopted by women <strong>in</strong> India wherethe newly irrigated fields <strong>in</strong>creasedyields, women’s <strong>in</strong>comes, and asense of empowerment. 34 Positiveresults were reported <strong>in</strong> Kenya and<strong>in</strong> Zambia, but <strong>in</strong> Zimbabwe, womenreported feel<strong>in</strong>g less comfortablewith the pump operation.
