ambitious project .u' (FF 258).Dr. Sorensen conducted a pilot study of secondary meaning by surveyingconsumers in Columbus, Ohio <strong>and</strong> Levittown, New York, <strong>and</strong> the results of thepilot study were used to design the final survey that was introduced bycomplainants.Significantly, the pilot study revealed very little solesource identification for Makita in Columbus, Ohio, <strong>and</strong> an extremely poorsole source identification of Makita among women consumers. (FF 260, 266).In designing the final study, Dr. Sorensen chose a geographicdistribution so as to survey consumers living in five differentmetropolitan areas: Chicago, Illinois; Los Angeles, California; Orl<strong>and</strong>o,Florida; New York, New York; <strong>and</strong> Seattle, Washington. Columbus, Ohio, the situs of the pilot study that yielded poorresults for the complainants, was not chosen for the final study, <strong>and</strong> thereasons for the rejection of Columbus for the final study were ratherdubious. (FF 260, 265-68).The universe of prospective interviewees consisted of persons between 18<strong>and</strong> 60 years of age who had either (1) bought <strong>and</strong> used any small h<strong>and</strong>-heldor small stationary electric power tools for wood or metal within the lasttwelve months, or (2) had shopped for either type of power tool within thelast three months. (FF 269). Dr. Sorensen also established interviewDr. Sorensen has conducted large consumer surveys on many occasions,including several surveys offered into evidence in U.S.I.T.C. proceedings.(FF 254).214
