Core FacilitiesANIMAL HOUSEHead <strong>of</strong> Unit: Alex<strong>and</strong>re Pires | Graduate in Agricultural Engineering <strong>and</strong> Animal ProductionHead <strong>of</strong> Facility since 2006Staff: Carmen Semião (caretaker), Fátima Graça (assistant technician); Maria Eugénia Campos (assistant technician)The Animal House is a shared resource thatprovides services in laboratory animalexperimentation <strong>and</strong> husbr<strong>and</strong>y, <strong>for</strong> all<strong>CNC</strong> <strong>and</strong> FMUC scientists using animals intheir research.The present facility has a capacity to houseabout 3000 animals (rats/mice). This facility<strong>of</strong>fers the following services: completehusb<strong>and</strong>ry, including feeding, watering,daily cage changing, as well as routineprocurement, inventory <strong>and</strong> care. In 2007,the facility started to provide specializedanimal services, namely: breeding <strong>and</strong>housing <strong>of</strong> transgenic/knockout strains <strong>of</strong>mice as well as wild type colonies,production <strong>of</strong> rats/mice embryos <strong>and</strong> litters<strong>and</strong> maintenance <strong>of</strong> athymic nude mice.Animal Room – IVC cages (type II)125The Animal House contains a barriermaintained facility, with 8 positivepressurised rooms, which are kept at 22ºCwith a relative humidity <strong>of</strong> 55%. The rodentsare breed in individually ventilated cages<strong>and</strong> a 12‐hour light‐dark cycle is maintainedwith an automatic timer. The facility has ananimal identification system <strong>and</strong> s<strong>of</strong>tware tomonitor animal records.Laminar flow chamber
